When I started practicing Mindfulness, our teacher gave us CDs where she had recorded exercises that we had learned during our weekly two-hour class and that we were supposed to practice at home during the week.
However at home the CD player was part of the hi-fi set in the middle of the living room and I could not picture myself practicing meditation in the midst of kids’ toys and TV noise. So I put the contents of the CDs on a USB key and meditated in the office, near the computer… thus disturbing my husband when he had work to do at home.
What could I do then? Buy a notebook? That would have been quite an expense just to play a few CDs. Eventually I found myself meditating late at night on the living room carpet when the family was in bed… but I often fell asleep too! That solution was not really ideal.
And then I read an article about an Audio Gong Timer which could play guided meditations without having to use a computer or earphones or whatever. That was exactly what I needed so I bought one - with a beautiful Mindfulness engraving. Then instead of downloading my exercises onto a USB key, I put them on a micro-SD card, placed it in the battery container and that was it: the sound came directly from the lovely little pyramid. And very clearly too.
I must admit the Audio Gong Timer is a little expensive, but I asked for it on the occasion of my birthday! Since then I have been using it day after day and I believe it helped me continue the practice of meditation after I completed the Mindfulness course – it had become a sort of “meditation companion” so to speak. I also let it chime at home from time to time, just for the fun of it, and the kids like it. They have fun trying to guess if the timer is set on “bell”, “dordjé”, “low gong” or “medium gong”. I like it when my children are interested in what I do – even indirectly. It opens a door for dialogue.
Moreover, since the sound of the bell or gong is supposed to be good to let go of stress, I even intend to take it to work someday and see if it relieves the atmosphere there too…
